As a kid, I wasn’t passionate about anything. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I had absolutely no artistic ability as a kid. Somehow, I skated through all of elementary school, middle school, and high school without taking a single art class. Nope, not a single one!
I discovered design by accident. I was at my girlfriends at the time house and her parents were starting their own business making t-shirts, blankets, mugs, and other promotional material. As they went through the process of forming this business they realized they needed a logo but neither one of them knew how to make one.
Luckily, her dad worked for HP and had access to the entire Adobe suite for free through his job. With that, he knew I was into computers and had a knack for figuring things out, so he asked me if I could figure out how to use Illustrator and Photoshop. I had never even heard of these programs, but I was all for it. I love learning new things and saw this as an opportunity to do that, so he installed the programs on my laptop and I went home.
Once I got home I sat down turned on Hawaii 5-0 on Netflix and got to work. I stayed up until 3 am working in Illustrator before I called it a night. When I woke up that next day I went to show them what I made, and they loved it!
Here is the design I made for them:
It was the beginning of a life I didn’t know was possible. Designing this logo opened up the world of graphic design that I didn’t even know existed before. Ever since this day, I have spent thousands of hours studying and learning and perfecting this craft. Two months after I designed this logo I decided to refresh it a little and gave them this:
This is the logo they still use today! Because of them, I found my thing, my calling, my purpose! Ever since then I have been in love with designing and not a day goes by that I’m not either creating a project or planning the next one. Following this passion of mine has shown me that when you love what you do anything is possible. It’s possible to make a living and have the life that you’ve always dreamt of. Don’t live your life wishing you would have. Be like Nike and just do it.
